How do you restore your faith when you haven’t spoken to God in years?
Heavy question; but a real one.
Maybe you haven’t prayed since you were 10 years old. The only days you go to church are on Easter and Christmas? Maybe someone hurt you and you’re angry at God?
Perhaps, someone you loved, died; has cancer, lost a job, or have recently been divorced, and can’t seem to find God in any of it? And one day you just lost faith; you lost hope, and gave up on believing.
If you’re reading this and you can relate, we want you to know… YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Just last week we were asked on 3 separate occasions, how can someone restore their faith in God when they haven’t prayed, or went to church in years?
To be honest, it took us a moment to respond, because our hearts were heavy to hear their sincerity of their hurt. We didn’t want to respond right away with a typical Christianize answer because these are real people, experiencing real life.
If you think about it, all of us know at least one person who was saved when they were maybe ten years old, and haven’t talked to God, let alone open their Bible or gone to church since they were kids.
So when we did take the time to respond, God placed it on our hearts to share what He gave to us in hopes that it will encourage someone else, who may be feeling this way.
No matter your reason for walking away from God, and everybody has their own story; the common denominator in EVERY story is that God never left you.
“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
~ Deuteronomy 31:6 (NLT)
You may have ran off to do your own thing in different seasons of your life. However, God has always been right there.
And He is right here, right now waiting for you. All you have to do is call upon Him.
No matter how far you have run from God, His plans for your life have not changed. He tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV); “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Sure you may have taken a detour but God hasn’t. And don’t think God can’t use your past for His glory.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” ~ Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
God is not like us, He does not do for us based on our performance, or our behavior. God loves the unlovable, His love is unconditional, He forgives the unforgivable. He is the God of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 100th chance.
How is this possible?
The answer is simple; His free grace!
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,” ~ Ephesians 2:8 (NKJV)
You are saved by God’s grace alone. We are told in Romans 10 that if you BELIEVE in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross and was raised again; confessed it with your mouth, then you will be saved. Receiving the FREE gift of eternal life.
If you were saved when you were a kid, but chose to live life without God, don’t let the devil make you feel that there is no hope for you.
The challenges of life have a way of weighing us down. And praise God, God doesn’t think or act the way we do. Because He can handle the anger, the resentment or the bitterness we may have towards Him.
All you have to do is come to Him. He is just waiting to rescue you!
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”~ Psalms 34:18 (NLT)
In the end it all comes down to this.
The hurt you feel, the loneliness, and the disappointments, God wants to take that all from you. You were not meant to carry those burdens.
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” ~ Matthew 11:28 (NLT)
God is not mad or disappointed in you, He is madly in love with you. If you have felt separated from God, we are here to tell you that can end today. Take a few moments and talk to God just like you would a friend. And if you don’t know where to start you can start with this prayer.
Heavenly Father, I need you. I have let life circumstances separate me from fellowship with you and I’m asking for your help. Please forgive me for my sins and restore my heart. I do believe that Jesus died on the cross and has been raised again so that I may be saved. Help me Lord to forgive those who have hurt me, and remove all bitterness and anger from my heart. Help my unbelief when things happen that I don’t understand as I grow in my faith. In Jesus Name. Amen.
PS…If you prayed this prayer, we encourage you to reach out to a friend that you know is in a personal relationship with God so they can help walk you through this new season. And if you want to share your story with us please email us, at firstname.lastname@example.org as we would love to lift you up in prayer as you walk this new journey.
