I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan…Do you remember that song from back in the day?
Sometimes as women, we feel like we can do it all; even if we’re not recognized for it. Until today. There’s a company who decided to put a salary on a mother’s worth, but what about a woman’s worth?
They estimated that a mother today would earn a salary of $162,581 based on what she does day-in and day-out.
I’m sure those numbers sound flattering. However, that’s the world’s perspective regarding our value as a mother.
The real question is what does God say about it?
The good news is that God sees our worth from a different perspective.
First and foremost, in scripture we see that God values all women; not just as those who are mothers. Not to mention, our value is pretty significant!
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 31 that a virtuous woman is worth far more than rubies.
“A capable, intelligent and virtuous woman—who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls.”
~ Proverbs 31:10 AMPC
When I read this, I was curious to know the value of the ruby in order to understand the virtuous woman’s worth. So I decided to do some research.
According to the Gemologist Institute of America, there are only 4 precious stones in the world (sapphire, emerald, diamond, and ruby).
Since ancient times, the ruby has been considered the “king” of precious stones. As it’s been called the precious stone created by God.
The ruby has also become one of the most sought after gems. In fact, the significance of a ruby’s value has even been mentioned in the Bible.
“No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; for the possession of Wisdom is even above rubies or pearls.” ~ Job 28:18 (AMPC)
“For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” ~ Proverbs 8:11 (KJV)
“A capable, intelligent and virtuous woman—who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls.”~ Proverbs 31:10 (AMPC)
What makes the ruby so valuable?
Diamonds are valued by the four C’s commonly known as; color, cut, clarity and carat weight.
However, rubies are valued not only by the four C’s; but it’s geographic origin, and whether the stone has been treated.
If a stone is treated, it’s been heated to high temperatures to help improve the color and clarity.
Therefore, an untreated ruby that is left in its original form; has a higher value that demands a higher premium.
So how does that translate into value? Well, let me give you a real life example. (You can fact find this by looking it up!)
In 2011 the Elizabeth Taylor jewelry collection was auctioned. In which, an 8.24 CT ruby ring priced at $512,925 per carat was sold for a value of $4.2 MILLION.
WOW! That helps us read Proverbs 31:10 in a whole new light.
Ladies, we are far more valuable than Elizabeth Taylor’s Ruby Ring!
Our role as a virtuous woman who; reverentially fears the Lord, honors her husband, runs her household in a manner that pleases God, and raises a family for HIS glory has more value than that of rubies, diamonds or pearls!
“A capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman—who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls.” ~ Proverbs 31:10 AMPC
In other words, we are extremely valuable to God!
I know many of us, can’t even see ourselves as a virtuous woman; let alone a woman who’s more valuable than a ruby.
However, we must start to see ourselves through God’s eyes and not our own.
There was a time in my life when I felt like I was missing the mark as a wife, a mother, even as a child of God. But it was in those most difficult times, I discovered I was just a ruby in the rough.
The truth is…
WE ARE ALL “RUBIES IN THE ROUGH!”
And remember: it’s the untreated ruby that demands a higher premium!
You talk about bringing things full circle.
With all our flaws; unorganized methods; the days we feel like we just can’t do anything. The kids look a hot mess because we’re too busy cleaning the house; doing laundry and cooking a meal.
Yes, even through all of that; I am, you are, a ruby in the rough!
God sees all, knows all and will reward us for everything we do as a virtuous women whether someone recognizes us or not!
