A nation is lost, people are dying, devastation is spreading globally and the people are divided. Everything we’re facing as a nation can be taken to the Lord with confidence that He hears us when we pray according to scripture. That’s why today I want to share a Prayer Guide For Our Nation with you.
Why A Prayer Guide For Our Nation
I don’t consider myself to be political, nor do I invest time in trying to understand politics. Instead, I pray fervently and trust God for the outcome.
Lately, I’ve been concerned about our nation. More importantly, concerned about how Christians have responded to events happening around the world. We may not agree with politics or world issues, but one thing we should all agree upon is prayer.
If your heart breaks for the world God came to save, and you’re not sure how or what to pray for our nation, I want to help you with that today. I created a Prayer Guide For Our Nation (available in our community library) so you can print and keep in your War Room, your Bible. or wherever you pray.
Called To Pray
It’s easy to get discouraged and overwhelmed with what’s happening in the world. You may even be wondering if there’s any hope for a such lost world. Well, the answer is simple…PRAY. Yes, pray more than you complain.
In my opinion, what’s happening around the world is not the fault of the lost. Rather a result of God’s people not taking their rightful place in prayer, humbling themselves before the Lord, and seeking His face so that He will heal our land.
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
~ 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)
I’m convinced that instead of complaining about what’s wrong with this world we as believers need to pray; because God is expecting us to stand in the gap!
“So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.” ~ Ezekiel 22:30 (NKJV)
The closer we draw to God through prayer and reading His Word, we’ll cultivate a heart of compassion to pray for the nations. As a result, we won’t get caught up in certain regions, countries, or political parties.
We’ll be able to hear clearly and respond impartially with fervency. The power of authority doesn’t rely on the person in the office. Rather those who take their rightful place of authority in prayer.
“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” ~ James 5:16 (NLT)
Who To Pray Over
When praying for the nations we want to include those who serve in a position of authority over the people.
- Those In Authority (Presidents, Kings, Queens, Prime Ministers, etc.)
- Local Authorities (Governors, Mayors, Police, First Responders)
- Judicial System (Supreme Court)
- Intelligence Agencies
- Upcoming Elections
Since we are instructed, to submit to their authority, we must pray for those governing authorities.
“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.” ~ Romans 13:1-2
What To Pray
Regardless of where you live in the world, we all bear the same responsibility to pray over the nations; internationally, nationally, and locally (states and cities).
God is not expecting the government to spread the gospel and make disciples. That’s the responsibility of the believer. However, the government is to help establish order and justice in the world in which we live. That’s where our prayer should be focused when praying for our nation.
We are to stand in the gap for; all men, wisdom, divine protection, so that truth and justice can prevail. Let’s look at each of these prayer points closely.
This prayer guide for our nation is available in our community library.
For All Men
God has appointed men (or women) in the office whether we like them or not, or agree with their policies. The Bible instructs us in 1 Timothy 2 to pray for all men first, then those in authority.
Which means we need to be more concerned about the person than the office. Yes, we need to pray for the office in which they serve. However, God is more concerned about saving people than politics.
The title they hold isn’t who they are rather what they do, Therefore we should be praying for them because after all, they’re people. The very people God came to save.
God desires that all men would be saved. Therefore, our prayers should line with God’s heart.
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” ~ 1 Timothy 2:1-4 (NKJV)
Because man is flawed the Bible instructs us to submit to governing authorities to the office, not the man. I think people confuse government submission with the submission to the person as a man.
Those who hold an office in authority need our prayers all the more. Praying that they would come to know Jesus and live a life of integrity in words and deeds. But how can we effectively pray for them if we are arguing among ourselves because we don’t agree with someone’s politics?
“In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.” ~ Titus 2:7-8
Ask God to bring wise and godly counsel to those in authority so they can rightly discern and lead God’s people. Pray for leaders to have a spirit of humility to receive such counsel and have ears to hear.
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. ~ James 1: 5 (NLT)
Those who are serving in the office are there because God appointed them for such a time as this. Therefore, we must pray for their protection so they can fulfill the purpose God has for them.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” ~ Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)
Truth To Prevail
Bind the spirit of corruption and confusion so that truth and justice can prevail.
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” ~ Micah 6:8 (NKJV)
We serve a just and righteous God who expects us to live justly, love mercy, and walk with humility. However, the judicial system is broken. Therefore, we must stand in the gap for our judicial system to become unbiased, treating all people the same.
“Hate evil and love what is good; turn your courts into true halls of justice. Perhaps even yet the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.” ~Amos 5:15 (NLT)
Prayer Guide For Our Nation
Heavenly Father we come before you in the name of Jesus, taking our rightful place in the spirit to stand in the gap for our nation. We humble ourselves before you seeking your face, turning from our wicked ways so that you would heal our land. Forgive us Lord as a nation if we have sinned against you in any way. Help us to live in a manner that is holy and pleasing to you.
Father we pray for all men and women around the world who hold a position of power. That they would come to know Jesus Christ personally and intimately so that it changes their decision making and their speech as they lead your people.
We pray for our President, Congress, our Judicial System, State, and Local Authorities, First Responders, and Military – all those who serve in the positions you’ve appointed to govern and protect our nation.
Surround them Lord with godly counsel and give them ears to hear. We ask that you would give them divine wisdom and a spirit of discernment as they govern your people.
We bind the spirit of confusion and division within the government and ask Father God that you would bring anything that’s being done in the dark to light so that truth and justice will prevail.
Father, we pray for protection over our nation and those who serve to govern this nation. Protect them Lord so that your will and purpose for their time in office may be fulfilled.
We pray blessing over our nation and your people. In Jesus name. Amen.
In The End
As a believer, we are called to stand in the gap for the nations; and when we begin to take our place in the spirit, God will show us things we don’t understand. Giving us clarity regarding who to vote for, and possible action He would like us to take to make change in this world for His glory.
“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” ~ Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV)
I encourage you to include praying over the nations in your daily prayer time. Now is the time – we are the people!
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.” ~ Psalm 33:12 (NKJV)
